Langsoond Yarn

Langsoond yarn has been produced since 2017 using the wool of Shetland sheep from the crofts of several neighbours and friends and includes the fleeces from Donna’s family flock of sheep . Each year the fleeces are collected, sorted them into colours and skirted to remove any dirt and vegetation before being set off to the Natural Fibre Company in Cornwall to be spun into lovely squishy yarn.

The coloured fleeces are spun blended to give various shades of naturally coloured yarn; each year the shades available are slightly different depending on the colours of the fleeces sent away. Each skein is labelled with the colour name (often unique to that batch) and the year that fleece was clipped. Currently three weights of 100% Shetland wool yarn is available, DK (Double Knitting), (220m/234yds per 100g), 4ply or fingering weight (350m/383yds per 100g) and Laceweight (548m / 599yds per 100g).

Langsound (pronounced Langsoond in Shetland) is the stretch of water along the east side of the isle of Burra that connects many of the crofts where the fleece comes from.
