Description
This hat is inspired by a traditional Fair Isle pattern, it is repeated to create a contemporary all over design, combining simple zig zags that converge to form a star shape at the crown.
It is worked in the round seamlessly using two colours of contrasting yarn.
It is named after the song “The Good Years” by the Scottish singer-songwriter Karine Polwart, and one of my all time favourite artistes. I was listening to the song on repeat while I was knitting the crown and it seemed a very appropriate name.
The hat can be knitted to go with the Shallmillens snood.

To fit an average-sized head: 53-56cm (21-22in) Circumference of hat body: 62cm (241⁄2in) Length from brim to crown: 21cm (81⁄4in)
Gauge:
27 sts and 35 rnds over 10cm (4in) over Fair Isle pattern in the round.
Materials:
BC: Jamieson & Smith 2 Ply Jumper Weight (100% Shetland Wool; 25g balls/118m/129yds), shade 77, 2 x 25g balls
CC: Jamieson & Smith Shetland Supreme Jumper Weight (100% Shetland Wool; 50 g balls/172m/188yds), Shade 2001, 1 x 50g ball
Smaller (UK 13/US 1) circular needles, length 40cm (16in), or longer for working magic loop or a set of 3 or more long DPNs in smaller size for working the rib.
Larger (UK 11/US 2-3) circular needles, length 40cm (16in) or longer for working magic loop or a set of 3 or more long DPNs in larger size and a set of three or more DPNs for finishing the crown in a size that achieves gauge.
This sample was knitted on 3.0mm (UK 13/US 1) needles for the rib and 3.5 mm (UK 11/US 2-3) needles for the main part of the hat.
